Afterville. Tomorrow comes today. The city of the future imagined by mass communication. Afterville is the name given to a sequence of events officially linked to the XXIII UIA World Congress Torino 2008, all designed to underscore the conceptual and figurative juxtapositions between developments in design and the imaginary futures of twentieth century science fiction. A complete project created by Undesign - a group of young architects including Michele Bortolami and Tommaso Delmastro, with Fabrizio Accatino and Massimo Teghille - and promoted by the Order of Architects of Turin and its Foundation, which will serve as a recognizable brand, under which, from October 2007 to November 2008, the following events will be presented: AFTERVILLE THE UNDERGROUND EXHIBITION (exhibit, Line 1 Metropolitana di Torino (Turin Underground) June 12 - August 7, 2008 This exhibit, which can be admired in the ten main stations of Line 1 of the Turin Metro, for the price of a ticket, features ten ideal types of cities, one for each of the metro stations. These cities exist only as reflections of the unlimited imagination generated in the past century through architecture, cinema, comics, design and - more recently - video clips, ads and videogames. The exhibits are hosted by GTT (Gruppo Trasporti Torinesi) in the futuristic spaces of the Turin Underground. AFTERVILLE THE MOVIE (Short film, Cinema Massimo) Test screening: February 29 10:30 a.m. National Preview: April 16, 2008 9 p.m. Promoted by the Film Commission Torino Piemonte and directed by Fabio Guaglione and Fabio Resinaro, specialized in science fiction shorts, whose films, such as "E:D:E:N" and "The Silver Rope", have won awards the world over, the short film "Afterville - The Movie" follows the adventures of a pair of characters on the day before the End, against the background of a visionary future Turin. Thanks to startling computerized visuals, the short - made with the collaboration of the best-selling American science-fiction writer Bruce Sterling, who also acts in the film - alters the skyline of the city, superimposing breathtaking scenarios on the current profile of Turin. FROM METROPOLIS TO AFTERVILLE (videoconcert by Larsen, Mole Antonelliana) March 27-28, 2008 The most visionary and utopian building in the city of Turin - the Mole Antonelliana, built at the close of the nineteenth century and today the seat of the National Museum of Cinema - will host the show entitled "From Metropolis to Afterville". For the occasion, the anticipations of the future will focus on sound, featuring the hypnotic, dark, extended music of Larsen. The performance will be accompanied by a video installation tracking a century of science fiction cinema. WEST OF AFTERVILLE (series of meetings, Circolo dei Lettori) April 29, May 13, May 27, June 10, 2008 At the Circolo dei Lettori (Literary Circle) in via Bogino, four meetings of a theoretical nature, four round tables on the theme of the relation between science fiction and design theory, featuring experts in the fields of architecture, creative design and communication. AFTERVILLE DIVINE DESIGN O DELLE CITTÀ DELL'ALDILÀ DIVINE DESIGN, OR THE CITIES ON THE OTHER SIDE (exhibit, MIAAO Museo Internazionale di Arti Applicate) (International Museum of the Applied Arts) October - December 2008 The exhibit entitled Afterville Divine Design, curated by Enzo Biffi Gentili, Luisa Perlo and Undesign, focuses on visions of spatial and esthetic solutions of the city of the future, taken to the limit: the cities on the other side. Among the leading players in this exhibit, in many ways unique and "unheard-of", with the express mission of "astonishing" the public at its inauguration, are two inspirational designers who are already watching us from "the other side": Toni Cordero and Ettore Sottsass. AFTERVILLE THE NEWSPAPER AFTERVILLE is also a tabloid-format newspaper that entertains as it reviews the cultural scene, with issues dedicated to various events on the calendar, ferreting out the news in the city of tomorrow and breaking it first: Afterville.
